Biography

"Dr. Angela Thrasher studies the effects of discrimination and other race-related stressors on African American health across the life course, particularly for individuals living with HIV and older adults. Dr. Thrasher initiated this line of research during her time as a Kellogg Health Scholar with the Center on Social Disparities in Health at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine. She also received training in minority aging as a scholar with the UCSF Center for Aging in Diverse Communities and was a member of the Measurement and Methods Core of the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research, National Institute on Aging. At UNC, she is a faculty affiliate of the Center for Health Equity Research, Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and the Global Aging and Technology Collaborative. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Thrasher provided capacity-building technical assistance to racial/ethnic minority HIV/AIDS programs across the United States. She led trainings, conducted needs assessments, and produced technical materials for community-based organizations, state-run programs, and federal entities such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Resources Services Administration, and Office of HIV/AIDS Policy. Other past roles include data analyst with the HIV/AIDS technical assistance program at Jackson State University, intern with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and volunteer with the AmeriCorps*VISTA national service program."
