Biography

Dr. Hernandez, a native of Mexico, received his Bachelor of Sciences in Biology at Stanford University and his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his Internship, Residency, Chief Medical Residency, and Nephrology Fellowship at UCSF. Dr. Hernandez also completed the Advanced Training in Clinical Research program at UCSF's Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He currently is an academic nephrologist based in El Paso, Texas where he joined the Faculty at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, after leaving his full-time Faculty position at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) in 2005. At UCSF and SFGH he was a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Scholar in Health Disparities as well as Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology. At the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine he is involved in medical student resident teaching, patient care, and research on the progression of chronic kidney disease, specifically evaluating the contribution of environmental exposures to heavy metals such as lead in the US-Mexico border region and among minority populations. He is also an active investigator in multi-center clinical trials of kidney disease involving mainly Latino patients.
