Biography

Allen Dyer, MD is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the George Washington University. Dr. Dyer is a graduate of Brown University and did his MD and PhD (religion/biomedical ethics) at Duke University, where he did residency and chief residency in psychiatry, psychoanalytic training and served on the faculty in the departments of Psychiatry and in Community and Family Medicine. Since 2001 he has been working with Iraqi health professionals and the Minister of Health to develop education programs and policy in disaster affected communities in China, Haiti, Japan and elsewhere. He joined the GW Medical Faculty Associates in 2012. Previously he was a professor at East Tennessee State University, where he served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Prior to that he was at Albany Medical College, where he served as interim chair of the psychiatry department, Psychiatrist-in-chief at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, Chief Medical Officer of the Capital District Psychiatric Center, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at the State University of New York. He is the author of several books including Ethics and Psychiatry: Toward Professional Definition and One More Mountain to Climb: What My Illness Taught me about Health, and he served on the editorial board of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics. He is the recipient of many fellowships and awards including the Kent Fellowship of the Danforth Foundation, the Institute of Human Values in Medicine Fellowship, the Kellogg National Fellowship, the Nancy Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education, and the Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and Sigma Xi, scientific honor society.
