Biography

Marilyn J. Baker is Associate Executive Director for Reports and Communication in the Policy and Global Affairs division of the National Academies. A nonprofit organization, the National Academies brings together committees of experts to advise the U.S. government and others on critical national issues in science, engineering, and health. Marilyn manages the external peer review and publication of reports authored by volunteer experts, as well as the communication of report recommendations to outside audiences. At the National Academies since 1992, she previously coordinated budget and personnel matters there and contributed to reports on higher education and the science and engineering workforce. Before 1992, Marilyn was Deputy Director of Academic Affairs for the State of Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board in Olympia, WA. In the 1980s she worked as Assistant Provost and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Southern California, where she also received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. Marilyn has two children adopted from Ukraine. Her volunteer activities include work on international adoption, immigration reform, and animal welfare. She also loves to sing.
