Biography

Jose Ángel Santa María was born in Tizimin, State of Yucatan, Angel holds a BA in natural resources management by the Marista University at Merida. He works as project assistant in the civil association “Youth Environmental Network of the State of Yucatan” and for the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute. His work has been on building projects for environmental protection, sustainable fisheries, the creation of spaces for reforestation, bee-keeping practices, protection of habitats for endemic flightless species, low impact tourism, and training of environmental youth promoters and ecotourism. Many of the projects that Angel has developed have been funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico. Yo nací en una pequeña comunidad pesquera del noroeste de la Península de Yucatán. Formé parte de un grupo de niños y jóvenes ambientalistas en la Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Lagartos y me involucré con el conocimiento de los ecosistemas y la biodiversidad. Estudié la Licenciatura en Administración de Recursos Naturales y he colaborado con centros de investigación y ONGs locales en varios temas en el manejo de recursos naturales. Me desempeño como asesor técnico forestal en comunidades de Yucatán, por medio del programa ProÁrbol, particularmente en el tema de Servicios Ambientales. He colaborado como voluntario y, posteriormente, como funcionario de la Red Ambiental Juvenil de Yucatán A.C., que promueve la participación juvenil en el desarrollo comunitario sustentable. Tuve el honor de ser becario de K.F. en el Programa de Fortalecimiento de Liderazgo en México (2011). Soy, actualmente, Consejero ciudadano del Consejo Consultivo para el Desarrollo Sustentable –Núcleo Yucatán, de la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente.
