Biography

Dr. Iveris Martinez completed a joint doctorate in Anthropology and Public Health and post-doctoral training in community health at the Johns Hopkins University, where she was later on the faculty of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the School of Medicine. She has over sixteen years of experience working in the areas of aging, health, and health disparities. An alumna of Florida International University College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Martinez returned to the university in 2007 as a founding faculty member at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) and is currently the Chief of the Division of Medicine and Society at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM). She is Course Director for "Addressing the Socio-economic and Cultural Aspects of Health" and teaches social determinants of health and interprofessional teamwork. Her interdisciplinary research and teaching have focused on social and cultural factors influencing health throughout the life course, with an emphasis in aging, immigration, and Latin American populations. Dr. Martinez has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Kellogg Foundation, Macarthur Foundation, and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for her research on social engagement and health among minority older adults. Dr. Martinez has served as Secretary on the Executive Board of the Florida Chapter of the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR), Secretary of the Association of Anthropology and Gerontology, and a founding member of the Health Committee of the Latino Providers’ Network of Baltimore City, Maryland. Additionally, Dr. Martinez draws from her experiences in international and local governments having served as a research consultant at the Pan American Health Organization and Oregon's Department of Human Services. She is a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, a long-standing member of the Gerontological Society of America, and President-Elect of the Association of Anthropology and Gerontology.
