Biography

Alissa Hamilton is an independent scholar living in Toronto, Canada. She is author of the book Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice, published by Yale University Press. In telling the story of "100% pure" orange juice's rise to the status of a breakfast staple, the book reveals some of the causes and repercussions of the food buyer's general lack of knowledge about the production of popular processed foods. The book has sparked a series of class action lawsuits in the United States against orange juice companies for their deceptive marketing practices. An authority on food labeling issues, Hamilton’s articles have appeared in various magazines, online media sources and academic journals. She has spoken at TEDx Cambridge on the subject of “How Do You Eat;” has been a guest on the Dr. Oz show; appeared as part of the Consumer Watchdog report on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer; and been featured and quoted in the Guardian, Atlantic, New Yorker, New York Post, LA Times, Boston Globe, Wired, NPR, Martha Stewart radio and others. A 2008-2009 Food and Society Fellow with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, she continues to work with current and former Fellows to advocate for more transparency of how processed foods are produced.
