Biography

Dr. Brewster obtained her BA from the University of Maryland in 1988 and MA in counseling from Clark Atlanta University in 1999. A native of New York City, Dr. Brewster returned to receive her doctoral degree from Columbia University, Teachers College in 2005. Upon completion of her degree requirements, Dr. Brewster went on to complete a Kellogg community-based participatory research (CBPR) post-doctoral fellowship at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. All of her work has been with medically underserved populations and researching the social determinants of health and the health disparities associated with the medically underserved populations. Her training is in community-based Public Health and she has been teaching health education/public health courses for over ten years, of which she has spent the last three years as an adjunct in the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work. Upon completion of her post-doctoral training she relocated to London, UK for one year with her husband completing coursework at the University of East London in the Gender, Sexualities and Ethnic Studies program examining the interface and intersection of social divisions (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, etc). In 2006, Dr. Brewster and her husband "the other Dr. Brewster" relocated back to the US and settled in Miami. Dr. Brewster spent the last two years with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health as the Assistant Director of Research working on myriad community-based diabetes related research projects.
