Biography

Dr. Roseman is a retired physician epidemiologist with a PhD in immunology and a postdoctoral fellowship in aging. He has been a generalist epidemiologist with many areas of research including chronic diseases, specifically diabetes, heart disease, cancers, systemic lupus erythematosus and dental diseases, often focusing on the genetic epidemiology of these diseases. He is the founder of the Jefferson County Registry for Juvenile Onset Diabetes studying the epidemiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. He has also been involved in research about agricultural injuries among Southern farmers and studies of suicide, homicide, car crashes. He conducted a number of surveys of risk factor prevalence. Much of his research is community-based and focused on African-Americans. He retired from the University of Alabama at Birmingham after 25 years of service. For many years he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Environmental Assistance Foundation which helped communities deal with environmental pollution. He was also a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and Chair of their Community-Tribal Subcommittee and received the Associate Administrator's 2000 Award for Special Service to ATSDR. Since retirement he has spent time diving for fossils and artifacts and traveling, especially to Modesto, CA to visit his grandchildren.
