Biography

John A. Rich, MD, MPH is Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy at the Drexel University School of Public Health. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Academic Public Health Practice. Prior to joining Drexel, Dr. Rich was Medical Director for the Boston Public Health Commission, the health department for the City of Boston. In this capacity, he oversaw the clinical functions of the Commission and developed initiatives to address emerging health problems. Dr. Rich conducts research on inner city health problems and has written on topics such as violent injury in young African American men, risk behaviors among inner city college students and racial disparities in health care. In 1993, Dr. Rich launched the Young Men's Health Clinic at Boston City Hospital; a primary care clinic designed to meet the health needs of young men in the inner city. Dr. Rich has received past funding from the National Institute of Mental Health to study the experience of violent injury for young black men and understand how it may predispose them to recurrent injury. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Dartmouth College, his medical degree from Duke University Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Rich also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
