Biography

David A. Kindig is a Professor of Preventive Medicine and Director of the Wisconsin Network for Health Policy Research (a University-sponsored program to build a Wisconsin health services research community and to conduct policy analysis of state relevance). He developed a nationally unique distance education graduate degree in medical management at the University of Wisconsin and also served as Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences from 1980-85. Dr. Kindig was Director of Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center (1976-80), Deputy Director of the Bureau of Health Manpower, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (1974-76), and the first medical director of the National Health Service Corps (1971-73). He is currently the Chair of the federal Council of Graduate Medical Education, President-Elect of the Association for Health Services Research, and was a ProPAC Commissioner from 1991-94 and served as Senior Advisor to Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1993-95. A member of the editorial board of Health Affairs, Dr. Kindig has written extensively on the health professions workforce, medical management, and other health policy issues. He has recently completed a one-year sabbatical in York, England and Vancouver, British Columbia, focusing on population health economics. Dr. Kindig received a B.A. from Carleton College and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago School of Medicine. His research interests include population health status, supply and distribution of health professionals, rural health, state and national health programs, equity in health services, international health, physician and nurse executives.
