Biography

After a distinguished career in academics, James O. Howell retired from the University of Georgia in 2000 as Professor Emeritus. During his tenure at the University, he served on several national and international editorial boards, and as Primary Editor for the Journal of Entomological Science. In 1986 he was named to Group VII of the Kellogg National Fellowship Program. In 1989 he as presented the Distinguished Alumni Award from Lynchburg College, and In 1990 he was selected as a Fellow of the American Council on Education. His administrative roles included Head of the Department of Entomology, Acting Associate Director of the College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, and Assistant to the President at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. After retirement from the University of Georgia in 2000, Dr. Howell was a columnist for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution for 5 years, specializing in home and garden pests. As a result of the popularity of his column, he wrote a popular book on that subject entitled "Hey Bug Doctor! The Scoop on Insects in Georgia's Homes and Gardens." He is presently revising that work to include the eastern United States. In 2004 he became a full time student studying Radiograpahic Technology, and now is the Director of Imaging Services in Radiology for Saint Joseph's Hospital in Greensboro, Georgia. He has several hundred publications and his works have appeared in national and international scientific journals, magazines, books, and newsprint.
