Biography

Mary Beth Bingman has recently retired as Managing Director of Appalshop, a a non-profit media arts and education center in the Appalachian coalfields. Before coming to Appalshop, she conducted research and developed training in community education and adult literacy education, as associate director of the Center for Literacy Studies at the University of Tennessee. She also has experience as a preschool teacher, peace education center staff member, community college adult literacy project county coordinator, and university adjunct faculty member. She holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Tennessee. She lives on a farm in the mountains in Southwest Virginia. Her current activities focus on her local community and on documenting an inter-racial day camp begun in Knoxville, TN in 1950.
