Biography

Valerie Segrest is a native nutrition educator who specializes in local and traditional foods of the Pacific Northwest. As an enrolled member of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, she serves her community as the coordinator of the Muckleshoot Food Sovereignty Project and also works for the Northwest Indian College’s Traditional Plants Program as a Community Nutritionist and Native Foods Educator. In 2010, she co-authored the book “Feeding the People, Feeding the Spirit: Revitalizing Northwest Coastal Indian Food Culture”. Valerie received a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Bastyr University in 2009 and a Masters Degree in Environment and Community from Antioch University. She was a Kellogg Food and Community Fellow at the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy and is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Washington's School of Built Environment. Valerie hopes to inspire and enlighten others about the important synergy of traditional ecological wisdom and scientific knowledge as we build a sustainable and safe food system for future generations.
