Biography

Sharon Rubin, Professor Emerita of American Studies, Ramapo College of New Jersey, was Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1993-2000. While a faculty member, she directed the Honors Program at the College. From 1987-1993, she was Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury University. During her extensive career in experiential learning, she was Director of Experiential Learning Programs at the University of Maryland College Park. As a participant in the Wingspread invitational conference, she helped draft "Principles of Good Practice for Combining Service and Learning," later published by the Johnson Foundation, 1989. She was president of what was then called the National Society for Internships and Experiential Education, 1989-1991; Vice-President, 1987-1989; Member, Board of Directors, 1986-1994; and Chair of the Executive Director Search Committee, 1990-1991. From 1991-1993, she was a member of the Maryland Governor's Advisory Board on Service and Citizenship. She has written and spoken extensively about experiential learning, service learning, and liberal education. Among her awards was a grant for study in Japan and Korea from the Fulbright International Education Program and a W.K. Kellogg Foundation National Fellowship.
