Biography

Visiting Professor Laura Nathan is a UCLA trained sociologist, who is an Emerita Professor of Sociology at Mills College. In her twenty-three years at Mills, Nathan was, for many years, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. For a time, she also held the position of Dean of the Division of Social Sciences. Dr. Nathan specializes in Methods of Social Research and Medical Sociology (especially the social aspects of cancer), and Holocaust studies. In addition to a variety of published reports, chapters, and articles, she has published a monograph on secondary analysis of survey data and several articles on various aspects of the cancer experience. She is deeply involved in work with the American Cancer Society, and is currently a California delegate to the ACS National Assembly. She has been the recipient of a W.K. Kellogg National Fellowship and a Thornton Bradshaw Humanities Fellowship. Recently, an alumna of Mills College established an endowed undergraduate fellowship, for social justice, in her name.
