Biography

Dr. Mittman is the Owner and CEO of an LLC focused on social justice, named “TEQUN-EquityNow” (Tequn Olam” means mending of the world in Hebrew). With ancestral roots in Northern Africa, South America, and the Middle East, Dr. Mittman calls herself “a citizen of the world.” Dr. Mittman’s research, teaching, writing, service and advocacy are anchored in equity in health and education. Dr. Mittman’s expertise include community based participatory research, diversity and inclusion, cultural and linguistic competency, unconscious bias, and health disparities. Dr. Mittman obtained her Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management in the Social and Behavioral Health track at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University. She has also obtained a Masters degree in Genetic Counseling from UC-Berkeley and is Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Dr. Mittman was the recipient of a five-year W. K. Kellogg Foundation pre-doctoral Fellowship in Health Policy Research, focusing on health care disparities. Dr. Mittman held faculty appointments at the Howard University College of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health at John s Hopkins University and the University of Maryland at Baltimore within the Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine Department. She served as the Workforce Diversity Director for the Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Mittman was also the Director of Health Policy Research for the Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions, a not-for-profit focused on diversifying America’s health workforce, led by former Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Honorable Dr. Louis W Sullivan. Dr. Mittman’s recent work includes engaging K-8 students in after school health clubs focusing on careers in the health professions. She is also a consultant for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) where she helps spearhead a study to measure the impact of implicit bias on consensus reaching in academic promotions. Lastly, Dr. Mittman collaborates with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) on a study to measure self-efficacy, mentorship relationships and career aspirations in underrepresented minority medical students. Dr. Mittman is a firm believer that education is society’s best social equalizer and often quotes President Lindon B. Johnson in saying that “education is the only valid passport from poverty.” First generation to attain higher education in her family, she is a testament to LBJ’s conviction.
