Biography

Dr. Siobhan Maty joined Trinity College in early 2011 as the Ussher Lecturer in Life Course Research, where she will work with both The Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging (TILDA) and the Growing Up in Ireland study. Dr. Maty is an epidemiologist with expertise in the conceptualization and measurement of social factors and their influence on health-related outcomes. Her current research interests include the biological and social (economic, cultural, structural, etc.) determinants of health and health inequities across the lifespan; the epidemiology of chronic diseases, especially type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; and the translation of research into action to achieve social and health-related change. Prior to joining Trinity College, Dr Maty was an Assistant Professor at the School of Community Health at Portland State University. Dr. Maty completed her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She holds an M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. At TILDA, Dr. Maty will use a life course approach to investigate the multi-dimensional factors influencing the prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and select cardiovascular diseases in older Irish adults.
