Prof. Snehendu B. Kar, University of California (UCLA) E-mail < kar@ucla.edu> Current Positions: Dr. Kar is a Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair in Global Health, Professor Emeritus of Public Health and Asian American Studies, and the Founding Director of the Executive MPH program at the Fielding School of Public Health, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Previous positions: As the former Associate Dean and Chair of the then single-department School of Public Health (SPH) at UCLA, Prof. Kar was responsible for all academic programs of eight divisions with over 120 faculty members and over 700 graduate students. Recently, he served as the Distinguished Professor and Academic Advisor at the Public Health Foundation of India in New Delhi. He also served as the Founding Director of the Executive MPH program in Community Health Sciences, the Head of the Behavioral Sciences and Health Education Division, and the Chair of Asian American Studies at UCLA. Before joining UCLA, he served an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor of Health Education and Population Planning, and the Acting Chair of Population Planning at the School of Public Health , University of Michigan (UM , Ann Arbor (1969-78). Before coming to the USA, Prof. Kar served as the Assistant and Deputy Assistant Director General (Research and Evaluation) and as a Research Officer at the Central Health Education Bureau, the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, Govt. of India, New Delhi (1960-1969); and as a Research officer at the Bihar Tribal Research Institute, Ranchi, India. Education: He earned his M.Sc. degree (1958) in Psychology from the University of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India; and his Doctorate (1966) and MPH (1964) degrees in Public Health and Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. He is fluent in English, Bengali, and Hindi; and has working knowledge of several other languages. His other honors and awards include scholarships/fellowships from the: Fulbright Scholarship, Kellogg International Fellowship in Health, Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance, Inc. (KFLA), Ford Foundation Population Communication Fellowship, East-West Center Population Communication Fellow, Fellow of the Delta Omega Honor Society in Public Health, the Smithsonian Population institute, and Fellow of the Public Health Leadership Institute (CDC/ Univ. of California). He is an elected fellow in three divisions of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues, and the American Psychological Society. He has presented several keynotes and in plenary sessions in international scientific and professional conferences. He has also served on the Governing Boards of several non-profit organizations and as a visiting professor at major universities. Research and Professional Interests: His research focuses on empowerment of women, population based health promotion and disease prevention (HPDP) with emphasis on cultural and psychosocial determinants of health, health communication and education, development of indicators for program evaluation, leadership development , acculturation and quality of life, and health promotion in multicultural and underserved communities. He has directed several research and evaluation projects in Brazil, Egypt, India, Japan, Kenya, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, USA, and Venezuela. Research Publications: Dr. Kar has over one hundred publications including five books, peer-reviewed research papers in leading journals, keynote and background papers for international conferences, and research reports.
