Biography

Barbara A. Fowler is Professor of Nursing at Wright State University in Dayton, OH, and has been on faculty since 1988. She holds a Ph.D. from Rush University in Chicago, IL (2003) and an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction and Nursing Education from Teacher’s College at the University of Cincinnati, OH in 1988, respectively. Dr. Fowler holds national certification as a Clinical Specialist in Public/Community Health Nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in Washington, DC. In 1992-95, Dr. Fowler was selected as one of 12 Fellows sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in the “National Leadership and Community-Partnerships Initiative”. In 2000, Dr. Fowler was selected to participate in the first two-year “Leadership Development Institute”, sponsored by the Oncology Nursing Society. Dr. Fowler received the Kellogg Scholarship for academic achievement and leadership while completing the required course work in 2000 and 2001, respectively, and was the recipient of the “Golden Lamp” Society Award to a Doctoral Student in Nursing for Outstanding Dissertation at Rush University in 2002. Dr. Fowler’s research has been funded by the American Nursing Foundation, Oncology Nursing Society and Bristol-Myers Squibb “Community Health Research Grant”, and Sigma Theta Tau - International Honor Society of Nursing/Beta Iota Chapter (Cincinnati, OH)). The research funding supported Dr. Fowler’s dissertation examining social processes influencing mammography screening and follow-up procedures among lower-and-middle-income African-American women ages 40 and older. She has also been the recipient of a population-specific grant in the amount of $200,000 from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for a collaborative community-based partnership research initiative with the Center for Healthy Communities to promote mammography screening and follow-up in medically uninsured or underinsured African-American women ages 40 and older in Dayton, OH. Dr. Fowler has served on the Latino Connections (community partnership liaison) in Dayton, OH. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate students in community/public health nursing and graduate level introductory research and evidence-based research during the past decade. She is currently partnering with several community agencies, such as Centro Esperanza Latina and Latino Empowerment Outreach Network (LEON) in Columbus, OH to increase mammography screening among Mexican women. Dr. Fowler has taught many beginning nursing students about the importance of promoting the health and well-being of culturally-diverse and disadvantaged or vulnerable populations. She is the author of several articles on minority healthcare issues and mammography screening legislation. Dr. Fowler has received the Graduate Teaching Excellence Award in 2008 and 2009, and was nominated for the Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award in the College of Nursing and Health at Wright State University on numerous occasions.
