Biography

Dr. Estrada is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning at UCLA’s School of Public Affairs. Professor Estrada’s areas of expertise include ethnic and racial demographic trends, particularly of the Latino population of the U.S., inner city redevelopment, social policy analysis and research methods including Geographic Information Systems. Dr. Estrada has been asked to provide his expertise related to ethnic and racial groups twice to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, serving as Special Assistant to the Chief of the Population Division and as Staff Assistant to the Deputy Director. In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Estrada has served on advisory boards to numerous non-profit organizations including the Pew Charitable Trust’s Global Stewardship Initiative, The Center for the Study of the American Electorate, The Governor’s Complete Count Committee for the 2000 Census, and the Southern California Association of Governments. He has served as a board member of New Economics for Women, The California Endowment, Latino Issues Forum, National Association of Childcare Resource and Referral Agencies, Hispanics in Philanthropy and AARP. He also has been a consultant to such groups as the Ford Foundation and many private sector companies. In Los Angeles, Dr. Estrada served on the board of Rebuild LA and as a member of the Christopher Commission. He also played a central role in the 1990 and 2000 redistricting efforts with successful plans for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the City of San Diego and as an expert witness in numerous single member district challenges. Dr. Estrada received his B.A from Baylor University and his M.S. and PhD from Florida State University.
