Biography

Dr. Cox is currently retired. Most recently, he served as Chair of the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 2006 to 2016. Dr. Cox received a B.M. and M.M. from the Eastman School of Music and an M.M.A. and D.M.A. from Yale University, all in Violin Performance. He has served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of New Orleans and Acting Chair at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. He has established numerous programs, including The Washington State Suzuki Festival, the Metroplex Suzuki Festival, the Central Washington University Suzuki Pedagogy Program and the Texas Christian University Suzuki Pedagogy Program. A student of Millard Taylor, Syoko Aki and Broadus Erle, Dr. Cox has been a member of the Rymour String Quartet, the Central Trio, Colorado Festival Orchestra, Waterloo Festival Orchestra and the White Mountains Festival Orchestra. Dr. Cox is a Registered Teacher Trainer in the Suzuki Method and has served in a variety of capacities with the Suzuki Association of the Americas, including: Chair of Institute Approval Committee, SAA Board Member, President-Elect, President and Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Teacher Development Committee. Dr. Cox was also selected to become a member of the Kellogg National Leadership Program. As a Fellow in Group 12, Dr. Cox traveled to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Spain, The Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, The Czech Republic, India, Israel, Jamaica and Egypt. During the three years of the Fellowship, his principle topic of study was "the teaching of acceptance between peoples." The Fellowship also included in depth training in diversity, conflict resolution and organizational management.
