Biography

JudyAnn Bigby, KNFP 11, joined Mathematica Policy Research in 2013 as a Senior Fellow where her work focuses on evaluation of state health reform initiatives and public health. Before joining Mathematica, she served as Secretary of Health and Human Services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 2006 to 2013. She successfully implemented many aspects of the state's 2006 health reform law that helped Massachusetts achieve near universal coverage. She championed primary care as the foundation of the delivery system and established a multi-payer statewide Patient Centered Medical Home Initiative that provided a platform for a bold primary care payment reform strategy. As the former Medical Director for Community Health programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital, she led the hospital's initiatives to promote health equity in the areas of childhood asthma, breast and cervical cancer, access to women's reproductive health services, and infant mortality. She was the Director of the Harvard Medical School Center of Excellence in Women's Health from 2002 to 2006 and served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School from 1984 to 2006. In 2011 President Obama appointed her as an inaugural member of the President's Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. She is on the Board of Directors of South Africa Partners and has provided consultation to universities in South Africa on strategies for developing health care managers and leaders. She is a Trustee of Wellesley College.
