Biography

Genaro is a third generation Mexican-American healing practitioner, born, raised and working in Texas. After formally joining the Southwest Workers Union and its sister organization Centro por la Justicia, he became executive director of both organizations at the age of 30. He has promoted healthy food and communities through a garden cooperative, developed just land-use plans and worked inside the school system and with municipalities to develop alternatives for healthy food for children and families in South Texas. Genaro is also the founder of the South by Southwest Experiment (SxSWE), a partnership across the South and Southwest with anchors in New Mexico, Mississippi and Texas. SxSWE strives for the creation of meaningful, practice-oriented spaces for healing and reconciliation among people of color, primarily among African-Americans and Latinos and communities of other racial and ethnic backgrounds.
