Biography

Angela Tagtow is a Senior Fellow and Endowed Chair in Agricultural Systems, Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Angie is a registered dietitian with more than 25 years of experience working at local, state, federal, and international levels in food and nutrition policy, public health nutrition, dietary guidance systems, research and surveillance, social marketing, professional and consumer communication, training, and education. In 2014, she was appointed as the Executive Director for the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP). CNPP works to improve the health and well-being of Americans by developing and promoting dietary guidance that links scientific research to the nutrition needs of consumers. During this time, Angie co-led the development and launch of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans with the US Department of Health and Human Services. She also oversaw the development and release of the dynamic MyPlate, MyWins consumer nutrition education campaign. For eight years, Angie operated a successful consulting firm that provided assessment, evaluation, policy development, communication, and education services to diverse clients that worked toward advancing greater access to healthful food and reducing the rates of diet-related chronic disease. She co-founded a non-profit focused on health and food systems in addition to forming a statewide community of practice that promoted evidence-based strategies to increase access to healthful food. Angie has served in leadership positions with the Iowa Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program and with the Iowa Community Transformation Initiative. Angie has served in professional leadership positions within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (IAND), Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, and the American Public Health Association. In addition to launching the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition in 2005 in which she served as the managing editor for 11 years, she has published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and serves as an editorial board member of the Childhood Obesity Journal. Angie has been recognized for her leadership and professional contributions by the USDA, AND, IAND, and the Association of State Public Health Nutritionists. Angie is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University.
