Martha Gilliland holds a B.A. in geology and mathematics, an M.A. in geophysics and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering. She was professor, dean, vice president, provost, and chancellor at different universities. Martha served on the science advisory board to the President of the United States for eight years. She also currently serves on the board of directors of a major U.S. corporation. Locally in Tucson she was a professor and Vice President at the University of Arizona, Vice President of Research Corporation for Science Advancement, Executive Director of the Literacy Coalition, a member of the Board of Directors of the University Medical Center (now Banner Hospital) and a member of the Citizens Water Advisory Council for the City of Tucson. Martha is the mother of two and grandmother of six children. She recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, hiked to base camp of Mt Everest, bicycled in New Zealand and Myanmar, and walked the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in Spain. She regularly takes grandchildren on river rafting, bicycling, and hiking adventures in the U.S. and abroad. Martha has published scores of books and articles on energy technologies, groundwater pollution, water policy, and the cost of public higher education. Three publications won major awards.
