The Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance (KFLA) Humanitarian Action Fund is based on the principles of concern for human welfare and the alleviation of suffering. This year - thanks to the generosity of our members that continue to contribute to this fund - we were able to support our Equatorian Fellows and their local humanitarian efforts by donating $5000 USD to address some basic needs caused by the earthquake on April 16, 2016. In response to the earthquake, a state of emergency was declared throughout the country and the national guard was mobilized to assist in rescue and relief effort.

The funds will be used to support medical missions to assist the persons that have been affected by the earthquake, mainly in the the Manabi Province. The local Fellows coordinating this effort (Iván Carvajal, Marisol Negrete, Carlos Gómez, Segundo Virgilio Tapia, José Suárez), agreed that the best way to help the victims of the earthquake was to expand a medicine fund of the medical missions that have been implemented in the area, with the support of the 501(c)3 Adopt-A- Village-International, who will also assist in the transfer and management of the funds donated by KFLA.

About Adopt-a-Village International

Adopt-a-Village International’s mission is to provide a hand up, not a handout, to break the cycle of poverty in impoverished villages. It operates as a nonprofit, nonsectarian and humanitarian organization that connects resources such as yourself, with opportunities to make a difference. Adopt-a-Village International partners with leaders in developing countries to provide sustainable improvements that meet basic human needs and improve quality of life, including:

  • Medical and dental clinics
  • Training for health workers
  • Equipment and supplies for existing hospitals
  • Potable water
  • Educational and micro-business opportunities

The organization started in 2003 and was incorporated by the State of Colorado as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization under the name of Hope Alliance International in 2005. Adopt-a-Village International (AaVI) has focused its humanitarian efforts in South America, specifically in Peru and Ecuador, with future goals of expanding to other areas in need.
