Turning gratitude into action

Martha Lee

Happy Chinese New Year to you from our Denver team. According to my Chinese traditions, this lunar year of the Sheep offers much hope with an emphasis on consensus, growth and an energy to move forward. That is what we are striving to do this year for our Kellogg network of 1600 strong fellows, who are doing fantastic work in 53 countries, representing 14 different fellowship programs funded by the W.K.Kellogg Foundation.

My invitations to you are:

  • Go to to see the global map of Fellows and learn how to connect to them.
  • Keep your profile up to date. That’s how we connect you to others to further and strengthen your work.
  • Celebrate our benefactor – Will Keith Kellogg (and what would be his 155th birthday on April 7th) – by volunteering between April 7th - April 26th to do a service project in your community or by highlighting and dedicating part of your current work to him.

Mr. Kellogg’s vision was to invest his money in people. Join other Fellows in that spirit of generosity and gratitude by serving others.

Click on the different sections of this newsletter to meet our newest board members, engage in the exciting upcoming Day of Service/Gratitude, check out the Humanitarian Fund update, learn about our new global blog, read compelling stories of what our fellows are doing in their communities and explore the opportunities available to you.

May the upcoming months bring you opportunities to experience, to give, and to share.

Where is the best place to get a global perspective from Fellows on the important topics of today?
The new KFLA blog, of course!

Each month, the blog will focus on a topic such as education, learning, health and wellbeing, food, economic security, racial equity and community engagement; featuring articles written by fellows from different countries, to provide us with a fresh and global perspective on these issues.

Our first blog on racial equity will contain articles from fellows in the United States, Brazil and Mexico, discussing social justice and equity. We hope that you engage with them on this conversation and find ways to leverage your work.

The Fellows Ana Lucia Lorío (LASPAU), Carla Corrales (LASPAU), Karla Blandino (LASPAU), and Marvin Kaiser (KNFP-06), got together in Jinotepe, Nicaragua on January 17, 2015 to meet one another, network and participate in the dedication event of a microenterprise initiative coordinated by the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation (JFRF).

As we mentioned on our last newsletter, we sent out a “Humanitarian Call to Action,” addressing the issue of unaccompanied children at our southern border. Many of you responded and participated. From that conversation, KFLA created the Humanitarian Action Fund to support Kellogg Fellows working to solve these issues.

We received a $5,000 anonymous gift from a Kellogg Fellow challenging the rest of the network to match the gift. You answered our request and as Fellows, we did it! We reached $20,000 and because of your generosity, the “Call for Grants” is now open! Thank you! You are making a difference in the lives of children!

As we welcome the alumni fellows from the Kellogg Southern Africa Leadership Program (KSAL) into the KFLA Global Network, we celebrate their commitment to form better lives for themselves, their families and their communities through education.

Here is one story we received from our KSAL Fellows

Louis Bonilla’s (KNLP-16) impactful involvement after his participation in the KFLA Foro 2014 in Panama

"There is much I can do to provide information and assistance to help people in Honduras who plan to go the United States. It is part of my community service to the country in which I live. Plus, frankly,
I enjoy it."

What do I do? I've retired to the farm! Growing organic lavender and trying to run our business with integrity.

My motto: Live responsibly, respect others, respect the environment.
