Biography

Karen D. Wheel Carter serves as Department Chair for Business and Social Science at Georgia Perimeter College’s Clarkston campus. Prior to that Ms. Wheel Carter was the Department Chair for the Paralegal Studies program at Atlanta Technical College. Ms. Wheel Carter’s career in higher education spans more than twenty years. Her efforts in this area have been recognized at the national and local level through various fellowship programs. Most recently she was recognized as a Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellow, a Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Fellow and Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Atlanta Technical College. Wheel Carter received her B.A. in Communications from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, her J.D. from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and is licensed to practice law in the states of Georgia and Ohio. While earning her law degree, she gained legal experience working in the Office of Consumers Counsel, State of Ohio, and the Office of Affirmative Action, The Ohio State University. After completing her law degree, she was selected as one of six Woodrow Wilson Administrative Fellows for 1988-1990. As a fellow, she held several administrative positions at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee,. Throughout her career, Wheel has been involved in community service. She is an alumna of Leadership Dekalb, Leadership Columbus -Columbus, Ohio, Young Leaders Program in Nashville, Tennessee. She has served on the Board of Directors UMR Communications, Board of Directors Junior League of Columbus, Board of Directors Opera Columbus and Board of Directors ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus. She holds memberships in numerous organizations, including the Columbus Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
