Biography

Dr. Kenneth Campbell is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of mass media law, history, and representation of women and minorities This is his 18th year on the faculty; he has also taught at North Carolina A&T State University, Benedict College in Columbia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His professional background is in newspaper journalism, having worked for The Miami Herald, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The St. Petersburg Times, The Greensboro News and Record, and the Niagara Falls Gazette. He has held several offices in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and currently serves on that group's Elected Committee on Teaching Standards. He is the author of more than two dozen refereed papers, book chapters and journal articles and has edited five editions of The State of Black South Carolina: An Action Agenda for the Future. He holds a bachelor's in political science from East Carolina University, a master's from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His civic activities include mentoring African American boys and serving on the boards of the local United Way (current) and Big Brothers and Big Sisters (previously) and as director of the Youth Department and Children's Worship for his church. Campbell is also the former director of USC's Southeastern Multicultural Newspaper Workshop, which trained more than 120 persons for careers in journalism. He was a Kellogg Fellow from 1994-1997. His focus was youth leadership.
