Biography

John Anthony Butler is Chief Operating Officer at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. Prior to joining the Brennan Center, Mr. Butler was the Chief Financial Officer of Legal Services NYC. Previously, Mr. Butler worked as an independent management consultant for both for and not-for profit organizations, focused on operations, finance and strategic planning. During the nineties, he served as a vice president with the National Urban League and as a Deputy Commissioner and senior administrator for mayor David Dinkins. He also was the recipient of a prestigious fellowship from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in its National Leadership Program from 1997-2000. Mr. Butler is a native of Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in the Williamsburg and Bedford Stuyvesant sections of Brooklyn, New York. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford University. Prior to pursuing his graduate studies, he served three years on Wall Street, in management information systems, with Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc. Immediately after receiving his graduate degree, he served overseas for Reuters LTD., in Venezuela.
